Org. Setting and Reporting

The internship is located in the Geneva office of the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) within the Office of Rule of Law and Security Institutions (OROLSI) of the Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO).

UNMAS was created to save lives, and addresses unsecured and poorly-managed stockpiles of weapons and ammunition, improvised explosive devices, dangerous storage depots, unexploded ordnance, landmines and cluster munitions. The Geneva office acts, inter alia, as its humanitarian hub by maintaining a triangular relationship with New York Headquarters and operations in the field.

The UNMAS/OROLSI/DPKO Geneva internship is for six months. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

Duties of the intern include, but are not limited to:

•Conducts research and draft official documents related to priorities of UNMAS;

•Supports the work of the Inter-Agency Working Group on Mine Action;

•Supports the office’s engagement with the humanitarian community;

•Assists on treaty-related matters, including the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention, the Convention on Cluster Munitions, and the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons;

•Attends conferences and meetings of interest to UNMAS, and provide verbal and written briefing notes to colleagues;

•Conducts specific research on current developments related to mine action and beyond;

•Contributes to the team’s day-to-day tasks as needed, including administration and communications matters;

•Performs other duties as requested by the supervisor.

3.Client Orientation:

•Considers all those to whom services are provided to be “clients ” and seeks to see things from clients’ point of view

•Establishes and maintains productive partnerships with clients by gaining their trust and respect

•Identifies clients’ needs and matches them to appropriate solutions

•Monitors ongoing developments inside and outside the clients’ environment to keep informed and anticipate problems

•Keeps clients informed of progress or setbacks in projects

•Meets timeline for delivery of products or services to client.

Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

•Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

(a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);

(b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or

(c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if , must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation;

•Be computer literate in standard software applications;

•Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and

•Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

Languages

Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required; knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
